Sensory Processing & Regulation
Supporting calm, regulated bodies so communication can happen.
REGULATION DIFFICULTIES MIGHT LOOK LIKE:

Avoiding certain sounds, textures or environments

Big emotional reactions or meltdowns

Difficulty coping with change

Trouble staying engaged

Overwhelmed in busy or noisy environments
When a person feels safe and regulated, they are better able to engage, communicate and learn.
Regulation is the foundation for communication, learning and connection. When the nervous system feels safe and balanced, the brain is better able to focus, process information, and engage with others.
When someone is dysregulated, it’s not a behaviour choice – it’s a sign their system is overwhelmed. In these moments, communication, attention and learning become much harder.
By supporting regulation first, we create the conditions for meaningful communication, participation and growth.
We support each individual to understand their unique sensory and regulation needs, and build practical strategies that work in everyday life.
This may include:
- Identifying sensory preferences and sensitivities
- Developing personalised regulation strategies
- Creating supportive environments at home, school or work
- Building awareness of body signals and emotional states
- Supporting transitions, routines and daily participation
Our goal is to make regulation feel achievable, predictable and supportive – not overwhelming.
Our approach is neurodiversity-affirming, strengths-based and collaborative.
We don’t aim to “fix” behaviours – we aim to understand them.
We recognise that all behaviour is a form of communication, and we respond with curiosity, respect and support.
We work alongside individuals and families to:
- Build on strengths and preferences
- Respect sensory needs and boundaries
- Create safe, flexible and supportive environments
- Support long-term skills, not just short-term solutions
Because when a person feels safe, understood and supported – everything else can grow from there.
THE COMMUNICATION TREE FRAMEWORK:
Communication grows when the whole system is supported.
Just like a tree, strong communication develops from the ground up – beginning with the foundations that support each person to feel safe, regulated, and ready to connect.
Roots: Regulation & Sensory
Everything starts here.
When a person feels calm, safe, and regulated, their brain and body are ready to engage. Sensory processing, emotional regulation, attention, and body awareness form the foundation for all communication.
Trunk: Feeding & Body Foundations
The trunk supports everything above it.
Breathing, oral motor skills, feeding experiences, and physical coordination all play a role in communication. These body-based systems create stability and strength for speech, language, and interaction.
Branches: Communication Development
This is where communication takes shape.
Speech, language, social interaction, AAC, and literacy skills grow and expand -allowing each person to express themselves and connect with others in their own way.
Leaves: Participation, Learning & Relationships
This is why it all matters.
When the whole system is supported, communication leads to meaningful outcomes – expressing wants and needs, understanding others, building relationships, learning, making choices, solving problems, and feeling confident and understood.
